BORN HULL 09/08/1895. SON OF WALTER LAZENBY SPAIN AND ADA BAILLEY, 105 HAVELOCK STREET. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. EDUCATED AT TRINITY HOUSE. JOINED THE ELLERMAN-WILSON SHIPPING LINE ON 1/07/1914. SHIP’S COOK. SERVED ON THE STEAM SHIPS, OTHELLO, TORONTO, ESKIMO, ALBISTAN, TYCHO, RINALDO, FRUCTIDOR AND MORROCCO. SECOND OFFICER ON S/S BURMESE. LOST AT SEA IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN ON 21/06/1918, AGED 22. THE S/S MONTEBELLO WAS SUNK BY ENEMY SUBMARINE WITH NO SURVIVORS. HE WAS UNMARRIED. HE LEFT £142 TO HIS FATHER IN HIS WILL AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE TRINITY HOUSE WW1 MEMORIAL. LISTED IN THE DU RUVIGNEY ROLL OF HONOUR.

SS Montebello, built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Hull in 1911 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 4324 tons. On June 21st, 1918, Montebello, on a voyage from London to Hampton Roads, was sunk by the German submarine U-100 (Degenhart von Loë), 320 miles W1/2N from Ushant (Ouessant). 41 persons were lost, included the ship’s Master.
