Hull Pals Memorial Post. SGT ERNEST WILLIAM WOODS 12/1297. Born 26th April 1880, Ernest was the youngest of two sons to Thomas and Matilda Woods of 18 St James Square, Hull. A Brushmaker by trade he married Annie Jeanette Gospel and the couple moved to 1 Humber Road, North Ferriby where they had three children- Jeanette, Winifred and Bruce. He became a postman in North Ferriby. Ernest enlisted at Hull City Hall joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 'The Sportsmen', 3rd Hull Pals. He was killed in action on 26th May 1916 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery; he was 36 years old.
