Keighley, Richard Ernest Clayton

BORN HULL 1896. SON OF CAPTAIN, EDWARD ERNEST & AMY ELIZABETH KEIGHLEY OF “LONSDALE HOUSE”, PRINCES AVENUE, HULL. HIS FATHER WAS A CITY COUNCILLOR & CAPTAIN OF ‘C’ COMPANY, 2ND EYR.. RICHARD KEIGHLEY WAS AN OLD HYMERIAN SERVING ARTICLES WITH WOODHOUSE SOLICITORS, PARLIAMENT STREET, HULL, BEFORE THE WAR. HE JOINED THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY AND BECAME CAPTAIN. HIS YOUNGER BROTHER ALSO JOINED THE RGA AND TRANSFERRED TO THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS OBSERVATION SECTION. RICHARD KEIGHLEY WAS KILLED BY SHELL FIE ON THE 1ST AUGUST 1917. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN 22 IN NOVEMBER.

HE IS BURIED AT BELGIAN BATTERY CORNER CEMETERY, WEST VLAANDEREN, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “I WILL GIVE YOU REST”.

HE IS RECORDED ON THE HYMERS COLLEGE ROLL OF HONOUR & AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH WITH A WINDOW MEMORIAL.HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 13TH AUGUST 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
