BORN THORNE 1896. SON OF WILLIAM & LIZ, 10 HIGH STREET. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR BANKS LTD FLOUR MILLS. HE ENLISTED HULL IN 1915, JOINING THE YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT. ARMY RECORD ADDRESS ABOVE. KILLED IN ACTION 24/7/1917, AGED 21. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST MART'S CHURCH, LOWGATE MEMORIAL. HE WAS ONE OF THREE BROTHERS WHO DIED IN THE WAR. A FOURTH BROTHER PTE, ERNEST DIGLIN, Y624, 6TH KRRC, WAS WOUNDED AND DISCHARGED FROM THE SERVICE ON 23/10/1916, WITH THE SILVER WAR BADGE.
The three Diglin brothers who died were George, East Yorks Regt, service no 13/505, 13/11/1916, Walter, York and Lancaster Regiment Service no 203159. 24/0/1917 and William East Yorkshire Regiment 7th Battalion, Service No. 3/33418, 25/04/1917. George and Walter's service records still exist and can be viewed on Ancestry or Find My Past. There was also a 4th brother who served - Ernest, Kings Royal Rifle Corps 6th Battalion Service No Y624. Ernest was disharged from the service because of wounds he received in action. He was discharged 23/10/1916 and awarded the Silver War Badge.His service record still exists.
