BORN BEVERLEY 1891. ORIGINAL HULL PAL. LIVED IN HULL WITH SISTER ELSIE SHEARER ABOVE. NB: CHARLES WILLIAM LAZENBY, RGA - 37 GOODWIN ST.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE WILLIAM LAZENBY 10/770. Born 1891, the eldest son of John and Hannah Lazenby of 77 Keldgate, Beverley. William was working as a Footman at Cave Castle, South Cave, before the war but was among the first to enlist for the new battalion during the heady days of September 1914 when the war still seemed a great adventure. After serving in Egypt and on the Somme, that great adventure came to an end on May 3rd 1917 at Oppy Wood in France. William’s body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was 26 years old. William’s youngest sister Elsie married and moved to Hull where she lived at 33 New Garden Street. I bet she never forgot her brother the hero. Who could possibly ever measure up?
